Thank you always for checking in with us when you have questions. There is so much rumor & misinformation out there. As you may know now because you check facts, we do not give away animals or adopt out animals to our homeless brothers & sisters. We never have. Any statements saying that we do are false. Our mission is to provide vet care (preventative and emergency, spay/neuter), food, water, supplies, and other necessities to the companion animals living with our homeless brothers and sisters.
Where do they get their dogs then?
People may leave abusive or dire situations at home and will leave that situation along with their companion animal. Some have come upon one another. . . many animals are dumped & they find one another on the street. Housed people who have a dog or dogs & did not spay or neuter will pass puppies out to housed or unhoused people to get rid of them.
A very rare occurrence of one of our people's companions having puppies may happen. That's why we are big proponents of spay & neuter. Most homeless people we support want their dog spayed or neutered, and we help them schedule it and SHAP covers the cost. Our mission is to support people who have an animal so they can remain a family. It is NOT our mission to give out or adopt out animals to housed or unhoused people. It never has been.
Our mission for over 25 years has been to give hope and help to the companion animals of our homeless community.

We're so proud of Karen, SHAP's founder and executive director, who is Animal Humane New Mexico's 2024 Animal Advocate of the Year! Karen was honored during the New Mexico Humane Conference on August 12. 2024. The conference was held Aug. 12 and 13 at the Embassy Suites on 1000 Woodward Place NE in Albuquerque.

Check out the new SHAP Street Van! On the road finally in July 2024, thanks to the generosity of several super special donors. Capitol Ford delivered a fantastic "ride" that will greatly aid SHAP's work on the streets of Santa Fe in the coming years!

Who We Are
Northern New Mexico Street Homeless Animal Project’s mission is to alleviate animal suffering and keep homeless human/animal families together. We assist the street homeless community in obtaining vital veterinary care, food, and supplies for their companion animals.
What We Do
We collaborate closely with Smith Veterinary Hospital and the Santa Fe Animal Shelter (and other clinics) for spaying/neutering, vaccinations, preventative care and emergency services. We also work with local businesses to provide food and other necessities. We advocate and educate the public and the city about the importance of helping our homeless community.
