SHAP’s Karen Cain Talks with Homeless Guardian

Chris After His Beloved Companion Animal Desi

Was Stolen on May 17, 2025

(Full Video)

Pup Desi was stolen from one of our homeless guardians, Chris, on Saturday evening May 17, 2025. A group of individuals were seen online May 17 plotting ways to track down Chris in order to “buy” this particular dog or “steal” the dog if necessary. Then Desi was stolen this same day from the area of Albertson’s on Zafarano.

SHAP, along with authorities, found allegations of animal abuse fostered online about Chris, to be unfounded, misleading, and untruthful.

This incident was reported to police. Stealing a dog from anyone, housed or unhoused, is unlawful, and can be a felony or misdemeanor and prosecutable. An active police investigation is being conducted.

If you are approached by anyone with this dog for any reason, please contact either the Santa Fe Police Department, or Street Homeless Animal Project by email at nnmshap@gmail.com. Desi needs to come home to Chris.

Desi is female, 6+ years old, spayed, never had puppies, chipped, has pet license, and has been with her guardian all of her life.
